The translation notes I promised to put up will hopefully be ready shortly. Since there seems to be quite a few people here and there wondering when to expect the full movie to be subtitled, however, I thought I would first make a few (speculative, ill-informed) comments to that effect.
The movie is premiering in Shibuya in just a few hours. No doubt the lucky few who will get to watch it in full soon are going to share their feelings with the rest of us, and I certainly will be waiting for their impressions eagerly. Note that the beautiful theme song, originally written for the movie One more time, one more chance, gets a special reissue today on the occasion of the premiere: at least we can enjoy a nifty CD.
I won't be holding my breath for DVDs to come out, however. Take one of the most celebrated theatrical releases of 2006, Toki wo kakeru shoujo, for instance. It premiered in July, and yet the DVDs aren't expected to hit the shelves in Japan until April 20th this year. As for Gedo Senki, another July release, I haven't heard of any ETA on DVDs at all thus far. On the other hand, the Kumo no mukou, yakusoku no basho DVD came up only four months after the theatrical premiere, at the time. Still, I wouldn't expect the retail release of Byousoku 5 Centimeter to become available before midsummer or fall.
And that's not even mentioning high-definition. Amazon.co.jp lists no more than three anime releases on Blu-Ray disc (KyoAni's reissue of AIR, GITS 2: Innocence and one 2006 Gonzo movie called Brave Story). Byousoku 5 Centimeter may get the BRD treatment eventually, and I sure hope it does, but that looks pretty hypothetical at this point (one 720p trailer is hardly solid evidence, is it?), and might even not happen before the movie is in fact broadcast in HD on some channel like BS-i.
Judging by some threads about the movie in various web forums, some people seem to have taken the release of fansubbed Oukashou as a hint that more was to come in the very near future. I just thought it appropriate to insist that this was unfortunately not the case.
Others also asked what I was planning to do when a full-length raw, or even a full-length HD raw would appear. Well, most likely buy the DVD and leave the subbing to experienced groups, like the Triad, who actually know their jobs and are committed to providing the community with a quality fansub. But the plain truth is, I don't have the slightest idea. I'm not even completely sure what I will be doing for a living and in which part of the world by then.
Lastly, there have been rightful complaints about the video quality of the fansub. Let me apologize for this once more. However, I don't really think I'm capable of making something markedly better out of the raw stream I used, and I'm not aware of better sources. Some may exist—there has been a German fansub by a group called eXile that features a somewhat better definition, and I don't know whether it's based on the same raw upscaled or another one entirely—but nothing approaching HD in any case.
All in all, it will still be several months until we can appreciate the movie, or even the first segment, in a format which really does justice to its stunning aesthetics.
La team française GGF a sorti l'épisode disponible, mais j'ai jeté un coup d'oeil et il me semble qu'il s'agit plus ou moins de ta traduction, peut-être un peu remaniée (un ~ano comme ça c'est quand même assez rare, et ce n'est pas la seule phrase identique). J'avais demandé sur leur chan IRC et ils m'avaient dit que ça avait été traduit du japonais et qu'ils avaient "comparé" avec ta version mais j'ai quand même l'impression qu'ils l'ont pris comme base. En tout cas, ça fait une version XviD en français pas mal encodée et avec une police sympa.

»J'allais répondre que c'était tant mieux, qu'après tout j'avais fait ça pour que ça serve, et que le principal était que la bonne parole circule. Mais par curiosité, j'ai été voir le fansub en question avant, et je dois avouer que j'ai été un peu choqué. Je m'attendais à voir une traduction de ma version anglaise, voire une traduction du japonais aidée du script, mais comme tu dis, ils ont en fait utilisé la version française, apporté quelques retouches mineures de ci de là (parfois en la rendant plus naturelle, ce qui est appréciable, et d'autres fois en rajoutant des faux sens), puis publié le résultat en leur nom comme si de rien n'était, bien que la plupart des répliques soient reprises mot pour mot. Il semble que l'inspiration de cette « traduction » de leur membre Kimio ne soit mentionnée nulle part, sur leur site web ou ailleurs. J'en aurais volontiers discuté un moment avec eux sur IRC, mais malheureusement je suis banni de leur chan pour « impolitesse » (j'ai lancé le téléchargement avant de dire bonjour). Tout de même, quelle ironie!
Tu me demandais dans ton autre commentaire si j'avais l'intention, par la suite, d'intégrer une équipe de fansubbers français. En vérité, je ne regarde jamais de fansub en français, donc c'est une communauté que je ne connais pas du tout et qui, égoïstement, ne m'intéresse pas tellement en tant que telle. Et je ne sais combien le genre de comportement dont on voit l'exemple ici est répandu (je sais qu'il existe par ailleurs des tas de gens très sérieux et respectables dans le milieu), mais ce n'est pas un premier contact qui donne envie de s'investir plus avant. S'il m'arrive encore de sortir quelques sous-titres pour tel ou tel raw qui, à mon avis, en manque cruellement (au point, donc, que mes erreurs vaillent mieux que rien), je crois d'ailleurs que je m'abstiendrai d'y incorporer une version française, qui prend du temps pour pas grand-chose.

Alors, je ne peux pas te laisser dire ça. Bien au contraire, la version française que tu as faites, vaut un GRAND REMERCIEMENT. La version anglaise me convient parfaitement personnellement mais il ne faut pas oublier les non-anglophones qui déjà perdent pas mal de séries animés, film japonnais.
Finalement, je pense qu'une version française est toujours bon quand c'est possible.

For what it's worth, Part 1 was very well done! And the video quality wasn't THAT different from other fan-sub groups that I have seen :)
I know working with the raw, translating the dialouge, and setting the subs is an extremely time consuming process......but seriously you should consider doing part 2 and 3.......
I would even be willing to make a small donation via Paypal ($ 15-20 US) if that would give u the incentive :).... as I doubt the official fan-subbers will translate this movie until it is fully released (in a full-length raw) and even then it's doubtful :P...

Concerning your request, I do appreciate your lavishness but, as I said, it's not really a problem of whether I'd like to do it or not, at this point. There simply isn't any raw material to work from yet, and there most likely won't be until the R2 DVDs are out. Pretty much the only way to see the movie in full until then is a round-trip to Japan, I'm afraid. I can't wait either, but we don't really have a choice now, do we.
Oh, and I'm indeed French and living in Paris.

I think we used the same raw (640x360). There only was a little mistake at encoding, we also recognized to late. ;)
But this was not a reason for a v2 for us. But shurely there will be one.

Downloaded from [DB] and usally just stop watching when i see it isnt what i thought it was, but the touching begining made me countinue to watch and 5 minutes later I was stuck and I must say its one of the best Anime episodes ive ever seen, and really nice subbing. Would be VERY happy if you could send a E-Mail if you have subbed next part or if you know other Fansub group that have. »DB have done it again - they hooked me up on another anime with another one of their fake subs. But I have to say, this is a great fansub of a great anime/movie. But, have you done this all by yourself? It seems like you have great talent (and an astounding amount of patience) if you are a typesetter, translator, encoder and whatnot. Like it's already been said, it would be a great waste if you didn't continue with your fansubbing.
I certainly hope you will find the raws for the next parts when they come out. Please keep on subbing this and similar animes (if there are any) - it's been so long since I've seen a true love-story anime :)

Concerning the complaints about the quality of the video - sure it's not fit to be watched on a 41" HD TV, but then, what fansub is? The quality is much more than decent in my opinion, and I've spotted no encoding errors either. I actually consider it a high-quality sub, but then, my standarts may be set too low ;)

»I can't take credit for DB's work (of which I wasn't aware). From what I saw, they took my translation, improved the timings and typesetting, and redid the encoding, so most of the praise goes to them, on this one.
