I said I would try and make a subtitle file out of yesterday's translation attempt. Well, here it is. Matching the English text to the voices helped correcting a few glaring mistakes in the translation, but don't expect it to live up to any sort of quality standards. You will surely notice that my skills at timing are abysmal, too (heck, this has to be my second sub, and then the first one was Angel's Egg ;-).
I hope you can get your video playback software to use this file, but if you don't know how to do it, it is unlikely that I can help. Even the program I use, mplayer, might not take it without a bit of tweaking, because of a bug in the ffdshow decoder. How it can be made to use it is by re-encoding the original movie file into something more convenient first, like divx+mp3 (causing some further loss in video quality).
Well, since you probably don't want to do those things yourself, you can grab a pre-made Matroska file, with my subtitle file included by the attached torrent.
Anyway, I assure you that doing that sort of things once in a while leaves you with newfound respect and admiration for the real fansubbers out there.
EDIT: updated the subtitle file and Matroska with the corrections kindly provided in the comments (thanks a lot!).
EDIT2: some more tweaking, especially of the timings at the beginning, which were awfully wrong. The small preview of the second segment is subbed as well. A new torrent was posted accordingly, and the link below points to it. I hope it lasts on the Tosho—I don't really know why the previous one got deleted (as far as I know, ADV holds no right to the movie yet).
And thank you for the subtitles! I'm retrieving it now!
If you want, I can go through it and edit the subtitle file when I have time. I don't have the tools to re-create the Matroska file though.
Still, I never put down the work of fansubbers. Translating, subtitling, and distribution isn't as easy as many people assume. And fansub groups do it without pay!

»Well, it was all fun and instructive to make this; you're welcome. And yeah, sure, if you want to edit the timings into something less off-mark, please do! :-).

»I just watched what you have, and I find the timing to be very good as it is. I did make a few grammar and proofreading fixes in the subtitling, if you don't mind:
Line 33: Capitalized "Extract of Cherry Blossom"
Line 59: Changed "yet" to "now". The phrase "I finished just yet" doesn't make sense to me. By context, this seems it should be "now".
Line 173: Changed "stong" to "hard" for grammar correction.
Line 266: Pluralized "hour".
Line 269: Modified the phrase to "My bad companion, time, made itself felt keenly" for grammar fix and to improve flow.
Here's the file: oukashou-edit.ssa
Truthfully, this isn't a whole lot of edits I had to do. And again, your timing was very good. Heck, watching your subtitled version was the first time this episode evicted tears from me. The other times, I either didn't understand the Japanese well enough or was too busy going back and forth between reading your translation from a printed page and watching the raw.
So, again, thank you for sharing this work. I, for one, highly appreciate it.

»Oh man...I wish I'd seen this page earlier, since I just finished making a sub file out of your translation...XD
Well, thank you anyway for your translation, and you're right. I now have immense respect for the fansubbers who do this all the time.

»Heh, I was just about to blow the dust off Substation Alpha when I checked back here and found the timing had been done! Great work! I'm still puzzling about their discussion concerning the Cambrian Period though, what on earth is Anomalcalis etc?
Some minor suggestions that I think give more natural English:
02:36 Her haircut, instead of "pop":
"it’s so short my ears poke out"
07:37, "...alike spiritually",
"Akari and I were kindred spirits" is the English idiom.
13:54 For "biting hunger": the usual expression is
"gnawing hunger"
33:26, re tea drinking, verb "drink" sounds unnatural in this context, I'd use "have"/"had":
"It’s the first time I’ve had some."
"No way. You’ve definitely had some before."
Just after that, instead of "And then, here" I'd use
"And next, this"
And for "dou kana", I thought "how is it?" rather than "what do you say", which sounds like she's prompting him to say thankyou.
Overall though you've done an amazing job single-handed, and I found your Japanese transcript invaluable too when trying to reword things, it makes it so easy to double-check the original words

»Ah, thanks a lot for those. It's very frustrating not to be able to find the right words, for lack of fluency. The subfile has been updated again with everyone's kind corrections, and I've left a torrent on /df/.
As for the Anomalcaris and friends, they are extinct critters from the Cambrian era. The shape Akari makes with her fries is that of a Halucigenia fossil. Maybe I'll put up some translation notes when I get the chance (some geographical comments might be in order).

»There are one thing that you didn't noticed - reference to the "Kanojo to kanojo no neko".
Here it is:
Akari: ne, Takaki-kun, neko... Chobi ga!
Takaki: Koitsu, itsumo kokoni iru ne.
Akari: demo, kyou wa hitori mitai. Mimi wa doushita no?
"Chobi" and "Mimi" are names of cats in the "Kanojo to kanojo no neko" (it's first Shinkai's work).
- reply
»I did find another amusing reference. Takaki was looking at a magazine cover in a shop, and on it was a shot from Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no basho (The Place Promised in Our Early Days). It looked like newly flooded rice fields with a train going from right to left in the distance. I'll have to find the images again to verify.

»Just wanted to drop by and say a biiig thank you. An outstanding piece of animation, and your work is very very much appreciated!

»Hello!
> 電車に乗って会いに行けるような郷里がなくなってしまうのはやっぱりすこし…ちょっと寂しいです。
I hear it as:
電車に乗って会いに行けるような距離ではなくなってしまうのはやっぱりすこし…ちょっと寂しいです。
That means something like this:
It's somewhat lonely that distance (separating us) will become not like we can easily ride the train and meet each other (but much bigger).
Sorry for my bad English, I hope you've got the idea. There is definitely 距離, not 郷里. And "会いに行けるような距離" phrase quite often appears in Google.

Thank You!
Now I just gotta figure out how to force mPlayer to display this correctly with the original .wmv webrip...

Torrent is available here: http://www.deadfrog.us/index.php?act=entry&id=8246
Hopefully, I have that working right...

It's not 樹霜日, but 重装備, heavy equipment:
Every time the snow falls I go to the school in heavy equipment (coat, etc.)

»Thanks for all the comments, and sorry for not replying earlier!
@Torquemada: glad I could be of some help. :)
I'm currently putting together some translation notes, including a collection of lines that I most likely got wrong. These two were on the list, and it's much, much clearer now.
@wa-totem: The first thing to try would be
mplayer so_and_so.wmv -sub oukashou.ssa(with all the sub options you want, notably-assif you have version 1.0rc1 or later). This may work. However, what I guess is a bug in the ffmpeg audio codec for wma may cause subs to get severely desynchronized, and I don't have a working command line to suggest instead. What I did was re-encode the whole movie first thing and work on that. A quick and dirty way would bemencoder -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -o reencode.avi blabla.wmv. You can improve video quality a little using xvid with good options and various filters, but that's a decent start, given the not-so-great original capture.@Max: good catch, thanks a lot! I ought to have fixed the French sub file by now. Perhaps I'll think about releasing a v3 of the mkv later as well.
@haens: you're welcome! As for the differences between v1 and v2, they're mostly changes in timings in the first few minutes of the video, some translation fixes (including the one kindly pointed by Anatoliy in these comments), and the subbing of the preview at the end.
@Nick: as I said in the mail earlier, it seems to be working alright. Thanks!

»Thanks so much for the subs =).

»Hello again! I'm glad, my comments were useful :-) So, one more:
> くらんで(??)より図書館が好きで
This should be like this (though sounds not so clear):
グランドよりは図書館が好きで
We liked the library more than the playground (or maybe the stadium).

»The mkv torrent finally got listed on animesuki, I don't know why it took so long (come to think of it I don't know how torrents get picked up by animesuki anyhow, I always assumed they had some sort of automated search engine, but in the case of 5cm/sec it was added manually by one of their moderators). Anyhow the addition to animesuki means it has been picked up by fansub.tv's automated system and so is now available by direct http download from their server. (Their server also automatically creates a gallery of screenshots, though in this case the pictures look a little soft to me.)

For linux users who want to get a hardsubbed version of this release, you could also use http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/, which includes ass support at least in its CVS version.

»Thank you very much for subbing this one. I really look forward for this when the teaser out.
The timing is not that bad for the first subtitle, Im downloading on 2nd version
I want to change the subtitle from ssa to ass for more easy subtitle editing (font changing, font matching, position maching, etc), if you don't mind, this for my self. I wanna hardsubbed it (i don't like mkv that much :D). Of course no credit change
Thanks for your hard work. I really appreciate it.

»Wow! As an irregular anime watcher in the USA, I never would have heard about this neat little film without your efforts. Dattebayo (yhbt.mine.nu) put your fansub up on their website on March 09, and it's gotten 180,000 downloads so far. Thanks so much for your hard work; I really enjoyed the experience! It's rare for me that an anime film stirs the emotions as this one did.
